Patriots Publisher Brilliance Audio on CD Value Priced; Abridged edition James Wesley Rawles Books
The book is full of technical information as part of the plot, so you will learn advanced techniques and get direction on what is useful and not.The plot refers to a complete breakdown in society due to economic collapse and resulting social unrest, A large portion of the population is wiped out. If you have desk job, live a cosmopolitan life, and/or don't have a gun cache, you're dead. Without being too specific and spoiling anything, the novel focuses on preparedness, bugging out, survival, defense, and eventually rebellion against tyranny. It is hard to put this book down.
The characters are not complex, but this is is a plot driven story, not a character driven story.
Some things to note about the novel:
It is heavy on Christian faith as binding the characters together and differentiating them from the unholy bad guys. The religious element in the story is of the "give us strength" variety, not "smite the infidels." I personally don't believe faith is a necessary precondition to survival, but I did not find the author to be too heavy handed in this regard.

Patriots Publisher Brilliance Audio on CD Value Priced; Abridged edition James Wesley Rawles Books Reviews
This book was my introduction to the genre a few years ago. It was, obviously, the product of many years of work. I believe it's one of the best in the apocalyptic / societal collapse genre - something of a benchmark. It has a quality of being an armchair "survivor manual" for preppers, but in the form of a fictional story.
I re-read it every couple of years when I'm on vacation. I always get upset when the author kills off one of my favorite characters.
Overall, it is something of a prepper's masterpiece. I highly recommend it.
Brothers and Warriors (Patriots of the American Revolution Series) (Volume 1)
Little Hornet Boy Patriot of North Carolina (Kid Patriots of the American Revolution) (Volume 1)
James W Rawles, is the Author of this story of survival, post the financial meltdown of the United states. He has written several novel about Surviving and has been labeled as a guideline for a prepper. It was seriously lacking in story material and a device to present this story of Survival..
it is written about a beautiful part of the country, the Northern Idaho area, loaded with good folks, game, fish and areas for good survival.
This was book is a hard read, long on details short on necessary facts and action, it is too detailed to the point where you just turn pages, scanning them trying to tied the details in with the Story..
I purchased a book that purported to be a survival thriller. It turned out instead to be a terribly-written manifesto about guns, more guns, the author's political and religious beliefs... oh, did I mention guns? There is almost zero plot. The characters are like cardboard cutouts - everyone is almost exactly the same, the protagonist is "perfect", there is never any conflict between the main characters, and frankly I couldn't distinguish between any of them except for their genders (and the author made that difference VERY pronounced, with the genders being extremely pigeonholed).
Couldn't even get past chapter 2, it was genuinely more banal and uninteresting than an accounting textbook.
I found this book fun to read. Rawls paints a picture of a group of prepper friends who band into a militia and create a well stocked retreat in anticipation of the coming collapse and then uses it to survive. He does a great job of being very specific describing equipment they buy and use. He fills the pages with survival ideas interspersed with action segments. He sows it all together to make an exciting read.
On the negative side I found his scenario for the second half of the book unlikely. He seems to be writing the screen play for the movie Red Dawn, supposing the reconstituted US government is using foreign mercenaries to suppress the populace. This scenarios takes the story away from the collapse into guerrilla warfare.. In addition, in the first part of the book Rawls talks about setting up the retreat, like people who live and work elsewhere have an endless supply of money. Using this endlessly supply they buy all these wonderful and critical things. As someone who is going thru this process I think it misses the very human decisions that must be made in choosing the best versus what can be done in the face of competing resource needs.
In summary, this is an exciting, informative book with a few scenario weaknesses. I would recommend it as a great read!
I found the story to be pretty good and a plausible story of what could happen down the line. My one criticism is that for a novel it is a little overly detailed, like a manual on survival, that I thought interfered with the story.
For example instead of writing. "T.K. heard a rustling noise outside the door. He grabbed his AR15 and creeped towards the door to see if it was an intruder..." he would write something like "T.K. heard a rustling noise outside the door which was now reinforced with double steel beams and 1/4 inch thick sheet metal around the frame as well as a double deadlock system and a one-way peep hole. He grabbed his AR which he recently painted in a green beret 1968 camouflage pattern. The gun had a collapsible stock and retrofitted with a 45 round magazine, and lazer viewfinder. The magazine was fully loaded and he set the safety to semi-automatic and started creeping towards the door in classic marine recon style...
Overall a pretty good book, but I would have saved the detailed technical stuff for his website that he mentions after the end of the story.
